MEET COPPER. Copper is about 6 years old and came to us from his elderly owner who became ill and could no longer care for her 10 cats. During his vet exam with us he tested FIV positive, otherwise in good health. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a retrovirus. It infects the cells in a cat and can compromise their immune system. FIV is a feline virus that cannot be transmitted to humans or other animals. FIV is NOT A DEATH SENTENCE. Cats who test positive for FIV can live long, healthy lives, most often without any symptoms. FIV positive cats CAN safely live with non positive cats. Copper is amazingly friendly and social. He loves to hang out and is always ready to eat. He has been in a multi cat foster home and doing great but what he really needs is a forever home. He is very good pals with Solo, who also came from the same home. We would love to see them adopted together but are also considering homes for them separately Myth Saliva can transfer the virus by sharing the same water and food bowls, and by grooming each other. Fact Incorrect! The virus stays deep inside the cat’s mouth gums. FIV is mainly passed from cat to cat though deep bite wounds. Usually during aggressive fights and over territory. FIV is very fragile, and does not live for long once outside the body. Also, the virus has to go through the mucus membrane, which is rare. If ingested it will die in the stomach. Be informed. Do your research. Do not listen to old school vets, we have come such a long way since then.
