Adopt Miss Tiffy a Brown or Chocolate Domestic Shorthair (short coat) cat in

Pine Bush, NY

Miss Tiffy (aka Tiffy Girl) arrived to us after being abandoned inside a pet carrier in Coney Island. When she was found, she wore a fancy collar with her name on it, and all the sadness and frustration that are born of being abandoned by those you love. Tiffy repeatedly caterwauled and hissed at her finder, which made it difficult for this Good Samaritan to hold her longterm. Tiffy’s story circulated on Facebook, but with all the good wishes and shares, still no 1 stepped up to help. Having no other option, the finder planned to take her to the kill shelter the following day. Watching a video of Tiffy’s body language when a human attempted interaction led us to believe that this cat was acting protective and defensive, not out of maliciousness, but because she was terrified. Despite being overwhelmed with other animals and having few foster homes, ECC could not allow this cat to end up at the shelter, so we stepped in to help Miss Tiffy. In the 1st few days, Tiffy barely ate and she constantly hid, avoiding human contact. Any person who met her would’ve mistaken her for a “feral” cat, rather than a cat who was probably someone’s companion animal for years! She was seen by our veterinarian and received a clean bill of health except for some dental tartar and a body weight under six pounds. From then on, we spoke softly, moved slowly, and promised Tiffy that she was now safe. Tiffy finally allowed some petting after three weeks! It was such a adorable moment to see her “remember” what being petted feels like and soon turn from growling to rolling on her back to expose her belly. While she is still guarded, Tiffy has given us a glimpse of hope and has taken the 1st step to finding a new home where she will be loved and appreciated for the rest of her life. Perhaps because she lived as an only cat all her life, Tiffy Girl is not a fan of other cats. She could potentially do well with other older cats who are very mellow, but she resents having overly friendly cats invade her personal space. Tiffy needs an experienced guardian who knows cat language and behavior very well, as she enjoys being petted but can be unpredictable at times when she becomes overstimulated. She is also very chatty, and you can carry on entire conversations with her. Tiffy is at least ten years old, and she would appreciate a quiet and patient guardian to share a calm home with. She may or may not be a lap cat once she feels comfortable, but she will surely be a good companion for someone patient and kind who is willing to take things at her pace. Could this be you?
