Adopt Willie a Domestic Shorthair / Mixed (short coat) cat in Mena

Location:
Mena, AR
Description:

Margie didn’t have any rescue missions in mind when she took her family for a visit to the Ouachita Mountains. She wanted pretty views and an escape from the Texas heat. As she was admiring the fireflies at dusk movement on the porch caught her eye. A black cat stepped into the light. He was terribly thin, ribs sticking out and patches of hair missing. Scars ran down his front legs. He was so affectionate at times he almost fell over purring and rubbing his head against anyone’s hand or leg. Margie’s family offered him some shredded chicken and the cat was voracious. But as he tried to consume the meal chicken would literally fall out of his mouth. They soaked it in milk and he was able to eat better. The next morning this unusual cat (hence called Willie for Wilhelmina) was nowhere to be found; but that didn’t mean he left their minds. The family purchased puree style cat food while out sightseeing, in hopes Willie would return again. Willie did return. The family inquired about him from the property owners but no one was missing a black cat with huge green eyes. As their stay drew to an end they contacted the Ouachita Humane Society. The family was relieved to learn it was a no-kill shelter but dismayed to hear about a waiting list. They agreed to pay all his medical bills (currently $300.0 has been raised for his care) and upon entering the shelter it was discovered he has only one third of his tongue remaining! This explains his inability to eat properly or to lap water. With the heat of summer upon us Willie was dehydrated as well as emaciated. Dr. Burgess examined Willie and speculated perhaps he had suffered a snake bite. Willie also had a heavy worm burden and on arriving at the shelter weighed four pounds; for comparison that is how much a 4 month old kitten would weigh. Today Willie has doubled his weight and is growing back most of his hair. His internal parasites are gone. He can lap some water and must have moist food to eat. Approximately 1/2 of every mouthful falls on the floor since he lacks a tongue to push food towards the back of his throat. His absence of tongue inhibits his ability to groom himself but fortunately he LOVES to be brushed. He is tolerant of bathes too, an indignity no cat should have to endure, but Willie is happy for any attention. Two striking attributes of Willie are his amazing green eyes and his long, long, tail which he carries proudly.****************All animals at HSO are current on their vaccinations and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. If not already spayed/neutered, there may be a short delay between when you select this pet and when they are ready to go home.Breed and age are determined based on observable physical traits.
